My Take

I believe in leading and running government like a business, with Calgarians at the top as our shareholders. Calgarians who will provide their expertise to help solve challenges as well as identify opportunities on the strategic direction
of our city through a process called crowdsourcing. With the benefit of the intellectual capital of Calgary, I am confident City Hall will run more efficiently and effectively. Calgarians will not only have a voice. They will be the solution.

Calgary needs a new type of democracy. One where we make decisions with true stakeholder input through crowdsourcing so Calgarians can build the city they want their children to inherit.

The three areas I will focus on as Mayor of Calgary are:

Build a Great City for Everyone – Especially our Children

I see Calgary as a city that recognizes the invaluable contribution of communities and volunteers. Let’s build this city on the strong foundation that makes it great – our people and in turn, our passions.

  • Build more recreational and athletic facilities, with a special focus on keeping our children active and safe
  • Through effective business processes, dedicate funds that make Calgary a great city – arts, culture, sports, festivals and more
  • Introduce a Community Liaison position which will work directly with volunteer-based communities ensuring their voice and requests are heard by City Council and Administration

Let’s Get Calgary Moving Again

Our fast growth is a beacon of opportunity that attracts and keeps Calgarians in our city, but it does not come without a price tag and growing pains. Infrastructure, transportation, traffic congestion, construction, West LRT, snow removal and parking. All of these areas deserve immediate attention with the focus on giving Calgarians their city back.

  • Conduct a best-practices traffic study to get Calgary moving again. Our “Management of Congestion Policy” contradicts itself, causing unnecessary traffic headaches
  • Review Calgary’s parking policy, rates and availability with an eye to business
  • Examine snow removal programs in other winter cities and implement a more effective one for Calgarians
  • Use the technology of today to help reduce traffic problems of tomorrow such as electronic notification of major construction and traffic delays

Run the City in a More Business-Like Fashion

To be successful, I believe we have to run Calgary in a more business-like fashion. Fiscal responsibility, transparent, collaborative approaches to running a city of over one million residents under the same measured and watchful eye as a major corporation. Giving our committed city employees the tools they need to be even more successful at serving Calgarians.

My business experience provides the focus that drives to results and a healthy return on investment for our shareholders – Calgary taxpayers.

  • Reduce City Council priorities from a staggering 25, clearly delineating between Council and Administration priorities so we can focus on delivering the core services Calgarians deserve
  • Increase the independence and authority of the city auditor who will work in conjunction with an ombudsman
  • Study and consider the implications of reducing the business tax framework which is currently a limitation to small-business owners’ future prosperity
  • Conduct a comprehensive economic study on the benefits of adopting zero-base budgeting
  • City Hall is in the service business. Implement a Total Quality Management attitude that is imperative to improve the relationship with our customers – over one million Calgarians
